Lambert, John (1619-83), engelsk general, på Parlamentets side under borgerkrigen; var 1647 fører for de misfornøjede officerer mod Parlamentet og også senere ivrig for »det lange Parlaments« opløsning, ligesom han spillede en ledende rolle ved oprettelsen af protektoratet 1656. Efter Cromwells død modstander af Richard Cromwell, søgte ved hærens hjælp at blive diktator, men blev fortrængt af general Monk og sat i Tower 1660. Born: Autumn 1619, Calton, Yorkshire Lambert joined the parliamentary cause at the outbreak of war as a captain. He fought throughout the wars, rising through the ranks to major-general. He battled bravely at Marston Moor , when the royalists were badly beaten. Lambert was Oliver Cromwell 's second-in-command during the Scottish campaign of 1650-51, and helped defeat Charles II at Worcester . After the wars he played a key role in politics, but was jailed after the restoration. He died in imprisonment. |
